Accidents involving cyclists are very dangerous because cyclists do not have much protection. Even a low-speed accident could lead to severe head injuries, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and the like. Many of these accidents are fatal.
Thankfully, there are some tips that cyclists can use to lower the odds that they will be hit. The following may be helpful.
Lights and reflectors
First off, cyclists should use lights on their bikes, along with reflectors or reflective tape. Some will also wear light vests or clothing with reflective fabric strips. All of this just increases visibility in low-light conditions.
The correct riding direction
Another thing to keep in mind is that cyclists should always ride with traffic, not against it. They need to operate as if they are part of that traffic. Additionally, in most cases, accidents are more likely when cyclists ride on the sidewalk. This should be avoided unless there is no other choice.
Ditching distractions
Finally, cyclists need to be well aware of what is going on around them, keeping an eye on potentially dangerous drivers. As such, it can be wise to leave distractions at home. Cyclists may be tempted to wear headphones so that they can listen to music while they ride, for instance, but doing so distracts them from the vehicles and sounds around them.
Even using these three tips doesn’t guarantee an accident won’t happen. Injured cyclists must be sure they understand how to seek financial compensation when it was a negligent driver who caused the initial accident – leading directly to their injuries.
